Frequently Asked Questions

1. What are the shades made of?

I use the standard lampshade styrene as a base for the shade. Leaves are layered between the mulberry paper (unryu) and the styrene. Shades are made flat with decoration and then shaped to form with round wires.

2. How do I figure out the size I need?

Three measurements are used to determine the size of the shade: T= Top Diameter, B= Bottom diameter, S= Side length (all in inches) I use T-B-S to state size. For example........... 5-10-8 the Top is 5" across, the Bottom is 10" across and the Side is 8" long.

3. Will they hold up?

Ultra-violet light (sunlight) is the enemy of most natural materials. In order to minimize damage, I have protected the top layer with a coating as well as used materials that resist fading. Some lightening of the papers (which are acid free) will occur. For best results, avoid bright sunlight and minimize heat within the shade by using an appropriate sized bulb.

4. What wattage is appropriate?

For my smaller clip-on style shades, I suggest 60 watts or lower. Medium shades can handle up to 75 watts and the big shades can handle any wattage.

5. How can you tell if it is too hot?

Heat can be monitored by feeling the inside of the shade. Styrene may become brittle if shade is too hot.

6. How do you clean such a shade?

Shades have a coating and can be dusted with a soft cloth. Vacuuming is also an option.

7. What kinds of hardware are available?

8. How long does it take to order and receive a shade?

After you contact me, it will take up to 4 weeks to receive your handmade shade. Shipping costs are added to price. I usually ship through the US Postal service unless a customer requests otherwise.
